Tennessee Soccer Camps

Goalkeeper Academy

June 16 – 18, 2017 (Friday – Sunday)


The Tennessee Goalkeeper Academy will offer a high-intensity training environment that caters specifically to goalkeepers interested in playing at the highest levels.

Scheduled Staff include:

Joe Kirt – University of Tennessee Assistant Coach

Hemant Sharma – Maryville College Assistant Coach; Tennessee ODP - Director of Goalkeeping

Allison Whitworth – Spring Hill College Head Coach & Former Professional Goalkeeper

Mary Mancin – Southeastern Louisiana University Assistant Coach

Bryan Walker – Tennessee Wesleyan Men’s Assistant Coach

Other staff will include former professional, current and former collegiate goalkeepers. This highly experienced coaching staff will lead campers through a rigorous three day, seven session training camp in the confines of the University of Tennessee's multi-million dollar Regal Soccer Stadium.

Our sessions will mirror the regimens of collegiate and professional goalkeepers, and will include high-repetition technical training focusing on Handling, Diving, Breakaways, Dealing with crosses and flighted balls and distribution, simulated game scenarios and tactical information, video analysis. We will also address the psychological aspects of soccer's most important position, as well as the formation of goalkeeper-specific strength and explosiveness workouts. This will be a unique opportunity for goalkeepers from around the country to train together in a specialized environment.

Camp will begin on Friday, June 16th, at approximately 3:30pm and conclude Sunday at approximately 2:00pm.

Tentative Camp Schedule

Friday Afternoon: 3:30 – 5:00pm

  • Set Position
  • Basic Handling: Contour Catch Hand Shape, Basket Catch, Front Smothering
  • Footwork Prior to Shot (“when to get set”)
  • Footwork After Shot (first-step explosiveness)

Friday Evening: 6:00-8:15pm

  • Footwork Into a Dive / (angle of power-step; push-off; shuffle to a dive; cross-step to a dive)
  • Low Diving technique (when to parry)
  • High Diving technique (“top-hand” saves)
  • Shot-Stopping Drills

Saturday Morning: 9:00 – 11:30am

  • Breakaways (recent and classic techniques)
  • Collecting Through Balls in the Penalty Area
  • Recovering and Reloading
  • Close-range shots / Reaction Saves

Saturday Afternoon: 1:30 – 4:00pm

  • Video Analysis from Friday’s session(s)
  • Angle Play
  • Set Pieces / Setting Walls
  • Communication / Organizing the Defense
  • Games: Ziggy’s!!
  • Games: Penalty Kick Challenge

Saturday Evening: 6:00 -8:15pm

  • Crosses
  • “3 Goal Situations”
  • Drop Step / Back to Bar / Tipping Over the Goal
  • Boxing (one and two hands)
  • Goalkeeper fitness activities

Sunday Morning: 8:30 – 11:00am

  • Pre-Game Warm-up Activities
  • Controlling the Penalty Area
  • Controlling the Defense Half by Playing off the Line / Collecting Through Balls From Distance
  • Playing With Feet Outside the Penalty Area

Sunday Afternoon: 12:00 – 2:00pm

  • Distribution (Goal Kicks, Throws, Punts, Drop-Kicks)
  • Dealing with Back Passes
  • Controlling Tempo of the Game
  • Starting the Counter-Attack
  • Goalkeeper Competitions / Goalie Wars – including Staff Goalie War Tournament!!
